Loving the jitters

I didn’t drink coffee for a very long time. In college I started with non-java fraps and then eventually crossed over to the very wimpy, but tatsy mocha. As I slowly transitioned into joining the caffeinated cult, I was confused as to why coffee houses brought on a crowd of regulars. Most people I knew just got their fix at home.

About a month ago I received my complimentary issue of Blueprint, Martha Stewart’s latest magazine. There in the local coffee shop with a blended mocha in hand, I visually tore through the whole thing, remarking on the utter state of euphoria I felt. Yet, it was quickly over as I closed the back cover.

Perhaps the best combination along with my coffee house is sharing that time with a friend. Since Christine transferred schools, she is only around for a few weekends. Monday morning she told me her schedule was getting busier and her availability for coffee dates were quickly narrowing. How could I say no?

Even though my blended coffees often make me shake with jittery chills because it’s usually the only time I drink coffee, the side effects of quality time with friends really brightens my day.

So good it hurts

I’m practically eating pain killers like they were candy. And by practically, I mean I’ve only taken them once, but they’ve been on my mind ever since I awoke this morning. My muscles are throbbing with soreness even though my body isn’t moving. A massage is no relief because of the pink burned skin. I’ve been in a constant state of “ow” since I rolled over in bed, cursing the habitual nature of our universe that it was morning again.

Then again, spending the weekend launching the wakeboard off the wakes and lounging in the Lake Don Pedro sun with old and new friends ain’t too shabby. Oh it hurts so good.

Photos to follow…

I just can’t let you go…

Matt, Christine and I just finished watching Music and Lyrics, and this was the appropriate response:

Mallory

Mallory and I lived together for our first three years of college. And even though I lived with seven other girls my last year of college and I’ve now moved back home, I still refer to Mallory as my roommate.

Me in California, she in Texas, we exchanged IMs before we officially met and discovered that not only were we in weird relationships, but we both had curly hair and the same style in music. C’mon, what are the odds? She opened the door of the dorm room, wearing that Krispy Kreme T-shirt and a huge smile. “When are y’all fixin to go to supper?” Y’all? Fixin? Supper? I knew this was the start of something great.

We really were quite the team. For three years we made arranging dorm furniture an art. Put us together, our people watching commentary was five times better than the Best Week Ever people. There’s even a vivid memory of driving to church on a warm day belting out Hanson’s (yes, you read that correctly) “Penny and Me.” Or how about that time we baked a funfetti bundt cake that didn’t come out of the pan, so we just poured frosting all over the top and grabbed some forks.

Most of those good times led to the day immortalized in this next picture. My car was full of stuff headed for storage and she was preparing to spend the summer in China. We had lived together for three years. Some could call it the end of an era! I told myself I wasn’t going to cry, but boy did I blubber. But it felt good to see that I wasn’t alone. Even after all those times she took out the garbage when it piled to the ceiling, made my bed and disregarded my messy half of the room, she had enjoyed the time we spent together too. (Yes, she did actually do those things and I still don’t know why we still don’t live together seeing as she’s the perfect roommate!)

And then there were the boys. They were our friends and foes, but quite often a topic of conversation. Remember how that one guy was a complete liar, Mal? And you took the leftover Halloween chocolate finger candy that your mom sent us, put it on a card and made it the lone middle one sticking straight up with the words “Boys Suck.” Inside you wrote about how I shouldn’t settle for scum, and also for my future reference “boys suck” is not the best combination of words to Google.

That was the year when we lived on the floor with the most desirable group of girls in the school. Boys flocked to our floor hoping to spend an ounce of time with these girls. We, however, apparently didn’t belong in the desirable group. And the two guys that we, and the majority of the girls at our school, were quite interested in … well, they walked right past the second door to the right to about the tenth one on the left. They didn’t know what they were missing, we’d say.

That third year you were an RA and I was copy editing the school paper and found a keeper of a boyfriend. Busy this, busy that, before I knew it you were friends with those two boys. All of a sudden ours was the first room they came to. One of them, perhaps the most coveted on campus, started hanging around a little more often. Before I knew it, graduation came and went. Mallory stayed there and I went back home. In the flurry, we lost touch.

Then on Wednesday I opened an envelope holding cardstock and shiny rice paper held together with a bright bow which told me Mallory is getting married to that guy. I screamed, I dialed and screamed some more. She wasn’t there, but a couple days later we chatted and it was great.

Andrew, I spent many days and months molding her, but I’m happy to say, you’ve got yourself a great future roommate.

Nature, it’s why I live here…

Me: Hey guys (Heather & Abigail) what is Gulag?

Heather & Abigail (all too enthusiastically in unison): Goulet?!

Me: No, Gulag.* It’s on my history review sheet.

Heather & Abigail: Not Goulet?

Me: Why am I moving?

Heather & Abigail: Yeah. Bitch.

Yes, it’s my last weekend of studying and also my next to last weekend in The Unit. Sad.

Snow in the Bay Area!

Filed under: Daily Sass, Friendly Sass — Emily at 12:34 pm on Sunday, March 19, 2006

I know I keep posting only pictures, but I can’t help it! It snowed last weekend in the Bay Area. I’ve lived there all my life and it snowed once, but melted before it hit the pavement. We hiked 11 miles to Murrieta Falls, the highest waterfall in the Bay Area. Now when my parents tell me that they walked to school 10 miles in the snow uphill both ways — I got them beat by a mile! And I know they’re liars because they went to school in the Bay Area.

The park rangers said it was the most snow they had seen there in about 15 years. They also said, quite matter-of-factly, don’t die or hurt yourself because you won’t be saved. Thanks for caring.

Nice socks, Nick. All three pairs! It’s amazing that we smiled, being as we still weren’t done with the 2-mile uphill.

Matt brought a Frisbee, and wouldn’t you know it, it became a sled! What it actually resulted in was an excuse for Matt to push me into the snow. “I promise it will work this time! I’m just a bad pusher.” I believed him and ended up with lots of snow down my pants.

And, of course, there were snowballs.

Sara and Robert joined us late. Note: You snooze you lose the snow at low levels.

Thanks Ricky, Jeanie and that cute little tripod for the pictures.

Boys boys boys

Heather just walked into the house. “HEEEEYYY!” It’s fun outbursts made for every-day occurances that make me want to live with boys. (Mom and Dad, please read on before forming any reaction that might result in long term judgements and/or decisions.)

You see, I live with seven women. (I hate saying women, but you’d probably think badly of me if I said girls.) It’s actually a pretty tame household, without the catty drama one would expect. Yet, the male visitors really brighten things up around here. This weekend, it’s Abigail’s Matt. In a few weeks, my Matt is coming. And there are several visits from AMR, Nate and John that keep us sane.

Living with boys could actually be an enjoyable time. Since our group has already defied the laws of mixing estrogen for prolonged periods of time, I figure our co-ed house would not fall prey to Real World Syndrome. (Although camera confessionals would be quite fun…)

This is all well and good, until I remember my brother’s stories of living with boys. Decorating the bathroom with pimple puss, chugging egg nog and then the stomach’s rejected egg nog and the over all smell. Gross and yet amazing that they manage to clean up so well.

I’ll forgive them for losing my bag. They sent me a Thanksgiving e-card.

Good morning, Homer

Donuts of the world, beware! It’s judgement day!

No, I did not have another donut binge.

Oh, you deserve to sleep in. Go ahead, press the little snooooooze button.

I know I deserve to sleep in. I got in at 1:30. This noise at 9 a.m. is not sleeping in.

But I got up yesterday!

Amen! The yellow, fat, balding, donut-holding Homer made a compelling argument.

Marge, is there such a thing as the cake fairy?

These lines were quickly followed by two hearty giggles from these two:

They spent the night at our house because the littlest one is at Children’s Hospital. He has been sick since Wednesday, and it turns out he has asthma.

So if you think of it, pray for the little guy. He’s the sweetest little boy you could ever meet. And while you’re praying for him, pray for my mom. She’s scrambling to get Thanksgiving together. As she said, the only time she’s come close to a turkey was when she put it in the freezer at my grandparents’ house. I’m making truffles. Boycott non-chocolate pies! There’s no such thing as a holiday without chocolate.

Baby, I’m aMAZEd by you

The Corn Maze

Can you believe we’re trusting these two, Robot and Christine, to guide us?

Think it’s funny to try and scare me?

I push people who try and scare me

Robot’s smart enough to scare other people

And Christine, well, she’s scaring me with her bride of frankenstein ‘do … though she works it

Me? I just try and make nice with the corn

The navigators steer us in circles

Must be more friendly with the corn

I’m lost!

All tuckered out after an hour in the maze

And the prize at the end of the maze — the ultimate bucket

What can I say? The trip home was well worth it to have fun with some of my favorite people! And it’s only getting better!
