We’re so PURE

Some could say I took a break from blogging/Holidailies. But preparing for New Years in Vegas is anything but a break. Well, perhaps a lucky break. We spent the past two nights at Pure. Jealous? Thought so.

The first night we had VIP passes and our new friends at the club got us on stage with birthday boy Jared Leto. We’re convinced he’s a woman and were going to ask him for eye makeup tips. But then we found out that he’s 35 and probably just hiding wrinkles. And as for the effeminate tendancies–his brother’s name is Shannon. ‘Nuff said. Christine and I had a moment with Jared. I waved and she stuck out her tongue out at him, because it’s what cool people do.

(Christine is mere feet from the tallish Lachey. Matt’s hand and my camera also made it in the shot!)

And we thought it was crowded the first night! The place was PACKED with a good number of celebs. Though Ashlee Simpson and John Stamos were no shows, the celebrity crowd included Nick Lachey and 98 Degrees vets, Flava Flav, Dave Navarro, Shannon Elizabeth and more.

All in all it’s a pretty sweet place, though obviously more enjoyable as a VIP. We’re in for another night of fun, so more photos will come soon.

Cynical 22 year old

So people are making fun of me via the Internet. It’s probably not the first time, but it is the first time I found out about it. Trying to think of a good comeback turns my brain to mush and all I can come up with is “Don’t you know that the word Internet is capitalized?!” Since it’s late, and I have better things to do than devote time to making fun of other people’s hardships, I’m going to blog for myself, and not for someone’s mindless entertainment.

For all those coming from that site, I had a fabulous holiday; as evidenced by these pictures which give me warm fuzzies:

The merry madness comes to an end

Christmas was good. Actually, I can’t really remember it being bad. Maybe only disappointing when new clothes wouldn’t fit. This year can be summed up with the holiday log, double meals, A to Z, fritata, and of course, family.

Yet as I listened to my Christmas music for the last time tonight, I was struck by a song that I usually can’t stand. It’s by Barbara Streisand, called “Grown up Christmas List.” I remember Christmas when I was younger and all the excitement and surprise that came with it. Thankfully mine were pretty carefree and easy. And during that song I couldn’t help but realize that real life is increasingly seeping into this special time–death, worries, fears, consequences, lies.

And as much as I want to say the hard times help make the good times that much better, I’m not so sure this time around. I know things change and life goes on, but I guess now at the ripe old age of 22 I foolishly wish things like Christmas could be so simple. It’s not that I had a bad Christmas or that I hate change. More like the thrill is fading and I don’t know how to bring it back.

Or maybe it’s just because this is my first Christmas without several weeks of vacation following. Who knows.

I’ve been promising you a glimpse into our ever-growing Christmas decor collection. No words I could put together could do it justice. Instead I offer you a photo essay.

Christmas in San Francisco Pt. 2

Two convertible lowriders cruised down Powell Street, blasting different songs with heart palpitating beats. The drivers, obviously friends, were calloused to the onslaught of naysaying. Instead they soaked up the fear oozing from the tourists who were stopped agape. Am I going to be mugged like all my friends said I would? This really is the land of fruits and nuts!

All the while, an old Japanese man plays a stringed instrument a couple feet away. Salvation army bells ring in the distance. Up the street, a non-painted guy stands in oridinary poses on a crate holding a cup he vigorously shakes as people walk by. Next to him is a singing, tap dancing penguin with a Santa hat. And manning the street corners are nicely dressed men who shoot out church tracts at a machine gun pace.

It is in this blur of massive twinkle lights and locust-like swarms of people on sidewalks that I think, man I love Christmas in San Francisco!

Oh happy day!

Double your revenge, double your fun

Practice was canceled. And thus two hours of my life–not to mention gas–are gone forever. While managing to get five Chipmunk’s Christmas songs in my head could be considered ample revenge, I decided to make the non-informant pay.

And by pay I mean pay for a slice of candy cane pie at Baker’s Square! Just imagine the mint chocolatey goodness:

This favorite begins with a dark cookie crumb crust. Next is a soft, light brown chocolate layer. The principal layer is a white ganache filling with peppermint chips. Next is a thin chocolate coating topped with whipped cream. The pie is decorated with red and green confectionery chips and two mini candy canes.

Amazing. I just want to know how many elves they’ve got working back there squeezing all that is good about Christmas under all that whipped cream! Revenge has never tasted so festive and sweet!

Alive. Stinky. Annoying.

Yet I do feel bad for the guy. He’s obviously peeved at his downgraded real estate. Twice now, as I’m getting to the blissful, finally asleep feeling, he jumps or something. I wait for the thud of doom or the splash of life. Neither. As I get up out of bed, which is quite a spectacle groggily falling from my loft onto my couch. And both times still alive. Annoyingly alive.

Terrific truffles

Filed under: Daily Sass, Holiday, Family — Emily at 11:56 pm on Tuesday, December 19, 2006

Last year, for reasons unknown, I decided I wanted to make a dessert for Thanksgiving. It had to have chocolate and it had to be a tad unusual. And it would help to be easy. It had to be truffles.

I’ve made orange chocolate truffles twice now and I hope to make them a Christmastime tradition. At one point in my family’s history, oranges were a Christmas tradition.

My great-grandmother Fern grew up in Illinois around 1915. Her father was a coal miner and her mother cleaned houses. Needless to say, they didn’t have a lot of money. As Christmas neared, children in her town would write letters to Santa, which would be printed in the newspaper. So she and her three young siblings submitted their wishlists. The man for whom her mother worked saw the letters in the paper and knew there was no way the family could afford the children’s wishes.

So on Christmas Eve, the man packed his horse-drawn sleigh, bedecked with jingle bells, and rode to her house. The children heard the bells and saw a man loaded with presents–an Illinois Santa. But the man also brought another special treat–an orange. In those days and in those parts, it was difficult to have oranges in summer, let alone winter. My great-grandmother said to have an orange was like gold.

And as long as she lived, the scent of oranges always reminded her of Christmas. And the years following, her mother would try to fill the kids’ stockings with oranges and, another item of decadence, walnuts. And while oranges are no longer an exotic treat, perhaps I can continue the tradition during Christmastime–with my own little spin of course!

In a saucepan, heat 1/2 cup heavy cream until hot. Chop 8 oz semisweet chocolate and 4 oz German sweet baking chocolate; add to cream. Whisk until chocolate begins to melt. Whisk in 3 Tbsp unsalted butter until melted; whisk in 1 Tbsp dark rum. For flavors, add about 2 tsp of it (orange peel zest, coffee grounds, peppermint pieces or syrup, etc.). Pour into bowl; cover. Chill 2 hours or overnight. Let mixture stand for a few minutes to soften. Scoop out mixture with a melon baller. Roll in hands, put into a bowl of the coating (I suggest powdered sugar, cocoa, chopped peppermint pieces, chopped nuts, etc.). Even if rolled quickly, the truffle mixture will melt and make hands sticky. So turn the heater off and wash hands frequently. It also may help to take breaks and put the mixture back into the refrigerator. Makes about 50 truffles, depending on the size.

*I got the recipe from a magazine cutout. I’d give credit if I knew which magazine it was… My mom’s guess is Redbook.
